What’s The Difference Between Coaching And Therapy?
Coaching takes you from where you are today to where you want to be.
Therapy usually takes you back in time and helps you figure out how you got to where you are today.
Coaches believe that their clients don’t need to be fixed. That they are their own best expert and are creative, resourceful and whole.
Therapy is premised on the idea that the therapist is the expert.
Coaches assign homework (small action steps) and hold their clients accountable. Usually the client comes up with their own action step.
Therapists, not so much. Some cognitive behavior therapists do give their patients/clients homework. (Who likes to be referred to as a “patient” anyway?)
Some coaches (like me) work with their clients on managing their emotions and their beliefs, in addition to the outer action steps.
Most therapists explore emotions, but not necessarily from the perspective that we each have the power to control what we think about and believe, and therefore attract into our lives.
